Film noirs are works of art. People all know about “Double Indemnity” which was directed by Billy Wilder in 1944. It is great movies in all accounts. Shot in black and white and featuring shadows, cigarette smoke, men wearing fedoras, and a femme fatale this is a tale of greed and lust in Los Angeles.
Fred MacMurray plays Walter Neff, an insurance investigator who walks into his office late one night bleeding from a gunshot wound. He sits at his desk, turns on a tape recorder and explains how he came to be in this situation. It began when he went to renew coverage for the car of a rich oil man, Mr Dietrichson (Tom Powers) but instead he talks to the man’s wife, Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) who is standing at the top of a staircase wearing a towel. At first they talk about insurance, then how nice it would be to see each other again. When Walter returns one afternoon Phyllis casually talks about how risky her husband’s job is and if it would be possible to give him a life insurance policy without him knowing about it. Walter sees where she is going with this and quickly walks out.
The movie industry has certainly come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1826 when Joseph Plateua and Simon von Stampfer invented a novelty toy that created the illusion of moving pictures on a spinning disk. At present, we have access to the technology of 3D animation, digital sound effects, CG (Computer Graphics) animation, and high definition images taken by equally high definition cameras. Yes, these advancements have made the motion picture one of the greatest past times, but it would be an interesting experience to have this movie blog take up the lesser-known firsts of this well loved form of entertainment.
1. The First Cinema
Many people attribute most of film’s firsts to America. But few realize that the very first cinema that was ever built for the sole purpose of showing films was located in Paris. Of course, this cinema is nothing like our idea of a movie theater now. The first cinema theater was located in a converted room in a Parisian cafe owned by August Lumiere, one of the world’s earliest filmmakers.
2. The First Film Distribution Company
In the early years of film, there were no distribution companies present as most films that were featured were only locally distributed. But as the film industry grew, there came a need to distribute. The Duquesne Amusement & Supply Company was the first to heed the said need. What this company, owned by Sam Warner and his brother Albert Warner, was very simple. They distributed and exchanged motion pictures – much like how video stores rent out copies of films on tape. Nineteen years later, the brothers renamed their company to Warner Brothers Pictures – the same company that we know very well today. Read more...
I get asked this question a lot – “Who is the best tattoo artist and where are they located?” I have always found this a difficult question to answer because every tattooist has their own unique skills and tattoos that they prefer inking over others. So the answer to this question would have to be personal preference. It is therefore your decision on which tattoo artist you choose to use.
Skills to look for in a good tattoo artist:
#1 Friendly, and easy to talk to through the whole process
Being able to communicate clearly with your artist is crucial as it lets him/her know exactly what you want with your tattoo design. A good artist should walk you through each step of the tattooing process and make you feel as comfortable as possible. Getting a tattoo for the first time can be quite frightening since you don’t know what to expect, but a good tattoo artist will make everything clear to you before they begin inking.
#2 Find which tattoos they are confident inking onto your body
A good tattoo artist should be skilled and confident in inking a number of different designs, but more often than not they tend to have a few personal favorites which they like to ink. I know of one tattooist who said he enjoyed inking angel wing tattoo designs, and as a result he had pictures to show of some stunning angel wing tattoo designs that he did in the past that looked fantastic. Find out what tattoos your tattooist enjoys inking, but don’t be put off if he doesn’t mention the design you want. Like I mentioned before, a good tattooist should be skilled in inking all designs not matter what the type. Read more...
Homecoming is a film that delves into the angst created by the dissolution and creation of relationships. A genre that dwells on the inner feelings we all experience when a relationship that we are involved in ends, and the dormant feelings of jealousy we can experience when a former dating or marriage partner has moved into a new relationship.
Homecoming focuses on a love triangle created when the town’s popular quarterback, Mike, returns from college to his high school with Elizabeth, his new girlfriend. His former flame, Shelby, who still held dreams of marriage with her high school boyfriend, is devastated by this turn of events. Instead of accepting the turn of events as reality, Shelby clings to the past as her version of reality.
Soon the competition between both females intensifies as an accident creates a state of dependency for one of the leading female characters. What distinguishes this movie from other similar films is the social message that the story conveys. Homecoming seeks to draw the battle lines between the two leading female characters along social lines.
On one side, you have Shelby who represents the quintessential small town American life. On her polar opposite you have Elizabeth, representing the implicit progress of the urban city life.
Instead of simply dwelling on a story of jealousy, the movie can be seen as a metaphor for the competing social pressures of those who seek to hold on to the small town lifestyle, and those who welcome the advancement that they feel that city life has to offer. Read more...
